![]() In order to learn more about Christianity and Western culture, Khan sends the Polo brothers back to Italy with the task of asking the Pope for 100 learned Westerners and oil from the lamp of the Holy Sepulcher. Kublai Khan is said to have been very intrigued by these two European men (Europeans were very rare in China at the time), and officially invites them to spend time with him in China so that he can learn more about Europe. ![]() Kublai Khan was the grandson of Genghis Khan and ruler of the great Mongol Empire, which at its height was one of the largest land empires in history and governed approximately one-fourth of the world’s population at the time. During the Polo brothers’ time in Bukhara, Uzbekistan they are approached by an ambassador of Kublai Khan and given the message that the emperor would like to meet them. Meanwhile, Marco Polo tells us in his book that his father and uncle after several years of trading in Constantinople (present day Istanbul, Turkey) would travel further southeast, spending time in present-day Greece, Ukraine, Russia, Uzbekistan, and China. Sadly, his mother would die when he was young and Marco would be raised by other relatives until his father’s return. During this time, young Polo would receive an informal education, learning the mercantile business and how to read and write Italian. His father Niccolò and uncle Maffeo were wealthy merchants and had set off together on a long 9-year trading journey when Marco was a young boy. He grew up in a Catholic family and lived his early life alone with his mother. Very little is known about his childhood except details gained from his own book. Marco Polo is believed to have been born in 1254 in Venice, Italy (a few believe he was born on the island of Korčula in present day Croatia). Depiction of Polo in Tartar costume Marco Polo: The Man and His Incredible Journeyįirst we’ll delve into what we know (or what is commonly believed) about Marco Polo’s early life in Italy, his incredible journey to along the Silk Road, his stay in China, his return, and the famous travelogue. Intrigued? I was very interested in learning more about this famous man and will share what I found during my research about the man, his amazing travels, and the legacy of Marco Polo. Some historians even doubt whether Marco Polo existed at all. The world that Polo described seemed quite strange and unbelievable to most readers, and even today many historians question the veracity of many of his stories. Polo’s book, Description of the World, offered one of the first detailed descriptions of the then mysterious eastern cultures to Europeans and would even inspire Christopher Columbus. The famous Venetian is believed to have left Venice at age 17 to embark on a 24-year journey through the Persian Gulf and Asia, spending much of this time in China in the court of the great Mongol emperor Kublai Khan. The Italian Marco Polo is probably the world’s most famous traveler and one of the world’s first travel writers.

![]() In this version, death isn't ugly and frightening, but attractive and helpful. There, Thanatos would deliver the souls to Charon, the ferryman on the River Styx. His job was to accompany the departed to Hades, the Greek underworld. In some illustrations, Thanatos appears with wings and an extinguished flame. Thanatos was the twin brother of Hypnos, the god of sleep, and both were portrayed as young, pleasant men. If you're going to give death a human face, why not make it friendly? That was the approach taken by the Greeks, who named death Thanatos. As we'll see in the next section, the frightening face of the Grim Reaper evolved after a particularly difficult time in human history. You can find a terrifying countenance when you look upon death. If you look at death and see a kind, gentle face, even better - you can put aside your fears. If you look at death and see a familiar face, you can understand it. This turns an abstract, invisible phenomenon into something real and tangible. To make sense of dying and mortality, humans rely on a tried-and-true method: They give death a form they recognize. Ĭlearly, what happens as we die, as well as what happens after we die, is a major concern, as it has been for thousands of years. Fifty-three percent believe in the existence of spirits or ghosts 73 percent in life after death. A 2007 survey found that 20 percent of Americans aged 50 and older become frightened when they think about what happens to them when they die. Death is a constant shadow hanging over everything we do. We're troubled by the idea of our own mortality. Most humans, however, aren't so easygoing. In Mesopotamian legend, Gilgamesh returns home and happily accepts his life as a mortal man. On the journey home, a hungry snake devours the plant, ending any hope Gilgamesh has of becoming immortal. Gilgamesh eventually falls asleep, but Utnapishtim still rewards him with a plant that has the power to rejuvenate its owner. Utnapishtim promises to grant Gilgamesh immortality if the hero can stay awake for a week. His travels bring him to Utnapishtim, a human who has been allowed by the gods to live forever. ![]() When Enkidu dies, the great hero becomes haunted by the prospect of death and sets out on a quest for immortality. Gilgamesh, however, remained just as mortal as any other man, including his best friend Enkidu. A product of Mesopotamian literature, Gilgamesh was the son of a goddess and a human king. In other religions, humans were created as mortals who tried, but failed, to achieve immortality. As their punishment for disobeying God, Adam and Eve experienced both spiritual and physical death. She then took the fruit to Adam, who also ate it even though he knew it was wrong. Unfortunately, Satan, speaking through a serpent, tricked Eve into eating the fruit. God told Adam to take care of the garden and harvest fruit from any tree - except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The first man and woman lived in the Garden of Eden, a perfect place. According to the Book of Genesis, God created Adam and Eve to take care of the world He had created and to populate the Earth. The fall of Adam and Eve is the classic example, chronicled in the Bible. In almost all cultures and religions, humans were first created as immortal beings who fell from their state of perfection. Before you can have the Grim Reaper - a personification of death - you have to have death itself. And for the Grim Reaper, the beginning can be found in the creation myths present in all cultures. As Lewis Carroll once said, it's best to begin at the beginning. When we're done, you'll know who the Grim Reaper is (should you spy him lurking by your deathbed), how he works and, most important, why he exists at all. We'll also examine how painters, writers and filmmakers have portrayed the Reaper in their works. We'll address all of these questions on the next few pages. We'll look at the origin of the Grim Reaper, the symbolism associated with his form and figure, and how he's represented in other cultures. But why did humans feel compelled to make the Grim Reaper, well, so grim? Why not make him a friendly and helpful guide to the underworld? And why, for that matter, does he have to be a guy? Ultimately, this is the "job" of the Grim Reaper - to put a human face on the concept of death. It may not be a pleasant image, but it is clear and unmistakable. When it does, he collects the soul with a well-practiced cut of his razor-sharp blade. He comes for every person, hourglass in hand, waiting for the last grain of sand to fall. We all know exactly who he is and what he wants. Enter the Grim Reaper, the black-cloaked, scythe-wielding personification of death. But the more I talk to people about the 90s, they really long for it in a different way. “At the time, I didn’t watch it much because I just didn’t have the time so I had no idea of the context or the impact. “For people who grew up watching MTV, that was the only place to go,” Kennedy said. She always kept a journal, but says some of the events she wrote about were so impactful that she still has vivid memories of them. Kennedy, now a morning radio show host on an alternative rock station in Los Angeles (she's also worked as a correspondent on John Stossel's Fox Business show) decided the timing was right to commit her memories to paper because of a general wistfulness for the 90s permeating today’s culture. ![]() People say to me, ‘What if your daughters read this book?’ And I say, ‘My daughters are going to read this and the man who actually gets it is their dad! For example, “2-switch coverage” tests combinations of 3 consecutive transitions. If a higher number of consecutive transitions are tested, we speak of “n-switch coverage” where ‘n’ is the number of consecutive transitions minus 1. If sequences of two transitions are tested, so all combinations of two consecutive transitions are tested, we achieve “1-switch coverage”. 0-switch coverage means that we do not focus on testing consecutive transitions. If every single transition is tested, we achieve “0-switch coverage”. The level of test coverage is related to the number of consecutive transitions that are covered. Since a state transition diagram doesn’t show invalid transitions, only test cases with valid transitions can be derived from a state transition diagram.Ī state table indicates valid transitions and invalid transitions, so a state table can be used for testing both. Within state transition testing you can choose to test individual transitions or combinations of transitions. Above the resulting states, the actions may be added. When the transition is invalid, it is shown as a hyphen (‘-‘). Mentioning the action with the resulting state is optional. When a transition is valid the resulting state is shown in the corresponding cell of the table. The left side of the table contains the states, and the top contains the events. The transitions between states can also be shown in a state table as shown below. If the off-switch is pushed, the electric current is cut and the lamp is turned off. If the on-switch is pushed, the electric current is enabled and the lamp is turned on. The correct behavior of the system is described in a state transition diagram that gives an overview of all states, the transitions between these states, the events that trigger transitions and the actions that result from events.
